Nigeria Visa On Arrival : Requirements and How To Apply For It

In this article, we will be discussing all that you need to know about how to apply for the Nigeria visa on arrival and the required documents you need.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the sixth most populous country in the world. It is home to a diverse selection of tourist destinations, including ocean beaches that are perfect for swimming and other water activities.  Enormous stretches of untouched nature that range from tropical forests to majestic waterfalls; some new fast rising cities; and climatic conditions that are particularly favourable to vacationing in certain parts of the country.

The Visa on arrival (VOA) option has been made available by the Nigerian government in an effort to make it easier for people from other countries to travel and conduct business in Nigeria.

So what is this visa on arrival application process all about? Let’s take a quick look at it:

Nigerian visa on arrival Explained

Considering the fact that applying for a visa to Nigeria can include extensive preparation, gathering documents and multiple trips to the Nigerian embassy in your home country, the government of Nigeria established the Visa on Arrival program as an alternative to the traditional method of applying for an entry visa.

The Visa-on-Arrival visa option permits the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to give Short Stay visas to foreign nationals at designated ports of entry into Nigeria on short notice.

In other words, if you choose to obtain your visa upon arrival in Nigeria, you will now be able to do it at the airport when you arrive in the nation.

However, before traveling to Nigeria, you must complete and submit an online application and obtain a letter from the Nigeria Immigration Service approving your application for a visa on arrival.

You must present this letter to the immigration agents at the airport when you arrive in Nigeria in order to obtain a 30-day visa right away.

Who is eligible for a Visa on Arrival?

VoA is available to visitors whose country of residence does not have a Nigeria embassy, consulate, or mission representing the Nigerian government. A person may also apply for VoA if they have an urgent need to travel for business.

  1. People in the business world who have a solid international reputation

You don’t have to worry about your credit card information because the Nigerian immigration service website has been updated with a nice user interface and a strong security system.

You must log into your account on the innovative1services site, to pay your visa and transaction fees there. You can carry out this using a MasterCard. See the images below:

Click on “Proceed to Online Payment”

Fill your personal, billing and card information and make payment.

After a successful payment transaction, you will receive a confirmation email.

Important Things to Note

Applicants need to be aware of the following:

  • Having successfully paid your visa fees online does not guarantee that you will receive a letter approving your application for a visa on arrival. It is solely within the purview of the immigration department to decide whether or not to grant a visa application. You must therefore wait till you have the approval letter for the visa on arrival before you depart for Nigeria.
  • Cash payments are strongly discouraged when applying for a Nigerian visa-on-arrival, unless you are transferring your money to your representative there, who will then pay the fee online on your behalf.
  • You will receive a receipt and acknowledgement slip after making your payment. Make sure that both of the documents are printed out. You are required to make copies of this document in order to use it as a reference when you are at the port of entry in Nigeria.

How long does it take to get the Nigeria Visa?

NIS will make a decision on your visa application within 48 hours. If they have chosen to grant your request for a visa upon arrival, a letter of approval for the visa will be attached as a PDF file and delivered to the email address you provided in your application. If your application was denied, they will also let you know via email

At the point of your arrival into Nigeria, immigration officers on duty will process your visa properly and stamp your passport.
