Nigeria Visa On Arrival : Requirements and How To Apply For It

On this page, we will be discussing all that you need to know about how to apply for the Nigeria visa on arrival and the required documents you need.

The Visa on arrival (VOA) visa option has been made available by the Nigerian government in an effort to make it easier for foreigners from other countries to travel and conduct business introductions in Nigeria.

Let us take a quick look at what the visa on arrival application process is all about.

Nigerian visa on arrival Explained

Considering the fact that applying for a visa to Nigeria can include extensive preparation, gathering documents and multiple trips to the Nigerian embassy in your home country, the Nigerian government has established the Visa on Arrival program as an alternative to the traditional method of applying for an entry visa to Nigeria.

The visa on arrival option permits the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to issue a short stay visa to foreigners at designated ports of entry in Nigeria on short notice.

In other words, when you apply for the Nigeria visa through the visa on arrival programme, you will granted an entry visa when you arrive Nigeria. However, you must complete and submit an online application and obtain a landing document from the Nigeria Immigration Service approving your application for an entry visa when you arrive.

The fee for the Nigeria visa varies by country. That is to say, the visa fees you will pay as an American citizen will not be the same as the fees you will pay as a British or Indian citizen.

The Nigeria Immigration Service has also added $90 for biometrics and $20 for transaction fees while using the online portal.

The Nigeria visa on arrival cost for Americans are $160, British citizens pay $143, while Indians pay $253.

How to make Payment Online

The NIS has made it clear that cash payments are not accepted to process your visa at the airport. You must do everything online, including paying for your visa fees.

You don’t have to worry about your credit card information because the Nigerian immigration service website has been updated with a nice user interface and a strong security system.

To make payment for visa fees, you must be logged into your dashboard to be able to do so.

See the images below:

  • Click on “Unpaid Applications”
  • Tick the box of the case file you want to pay for, then click on “Pay $160” or as the case may be.
  • You will be redirected to the innovative1services website to pay your visa fees and transaction fees charges there. You can carry out this transaction by using a MasterCard.

  • Click on “Proceed Payment”.
  • Fill your personal, billing and card information and make payment.
  • After a successful payment transaction, you will receive a confirmation email.

Important Things to Note

Applicants need to be aware of the following:

  • Having successfully paid your visa fees online does not guarantee that you will be granted visa. It is solely the prerogative of the immigration department to decide whether or not to grant you visa. You must therefore wait till you have the approval letter for the visa on arrival before your trip to Nigeria.
  • Cash payments are strongly discouraged when applying for a Nigerian visa on arrival. Unless you are transferring your money to your representative in Nigeria, who will in turn pay the fees on your behalf.
  • You will receive a receipt and acknowledgement slip after making your payment. Make sure that both of the documents are printed out. You are required to make copies of this document in order to use it as reference when you arrive at the port of entry in Nigeria.

How long does it take to get the Nigeria Visa?

NIS will make a decision on your visa application within 48 hours. If they have chosen to grant your request for a visa upon arrival, a letter of approval for the visa will be attached as a PDF file and delivered to the email address you provided in your application. If your application was denied, they will also let you know via email.
